Once you’ve learned the single crochet, the rest of the stitches are pretty easy. Today I’m going to show you the half-double crochet.
Let’s start with a chain of 7 again.
Go into the 2nd chain from your hook and make a half-double crochet, as follows.
Make a half-double crochet in each stitch until the end of the row.
The Turning Chain: Many patterns use a chain 2, and they count it as the first stitch. This means that you would chain 2 and turn, and skip the first stitch, half-double crocheting until the end. Then, when you went back across, you’d make the last stitch of the row into the chain 2.
Like I said during the single crochet tutorial, I think this makes it unnecessarily harder (of course, it’s good to know both). I like to use a looser chain 1, and I do not count it as my turning chain. So that’s what I’ll be showing you. 🙂
Chain one loosely, and turn:
Make a half-double crochet in each stitch until the end of the row. Make sure that you count them when you’re finished, as it’s easy to add one or skip one inadvertently.
Half-double crochets are abbreviated in patterns as ‘hdc’.
