Remember Cinder? Well, I’ve actually finished all four of the Lunar Chronicles amigurumis. And I came to the realization that Winter comes out on Tuesday.

Let me just repeat that: WINTER COMES OUT ON TUESDAY!!!

Sorry, sorry. I’m calming down now. (No I’m not. I probably won’t calm down about Winter for at least another month. But let’s pretend I’m calm.) I thought it was about time to post about Scarlet, because of this whole two-days-left thing! And if all goes well, I shall be posting about Cress and Winter before then as well. No promises, though.

Oh, and do you like my fancy emoji title? 😉 An emoji for each of the characters, in case you were confused. The high heel is supposed to be red, but WordPress changes it to purple for some reason.

So here is Mademoiselle Scarlet Benoit:

Scarlet’s book is based on Little Red Riding Hood, so it should come as no surprise that she had her iconic red hoodie. It’s supposed to clash with her hair, which is “part of the reason she likes it.”

Her hair took a while to crochet, but it was fun. Usually when I do corkscrew curls, it’s the 2 sc in each chain kind. This time I did a really long chain (around 40) and did *sc, sk a chain* all the way to the end. It used less yarn and resulted in a looser ringlet, which is how I picture Scarlet’s hair. Winter, on the other hand, has tight ringlets, which should be fun (and yarn-guzzling)! 😀

Materials I Used

• Red Heart Super Saver in Aran
• burgundy worsted-weight yarn (hair)
• blue Stylecraft Special DK (for jeans)
• thin red yarn with no label – I got it from a rummage sale (for hoodie)
• 2 x 12mm brown safety eyes
• needle & thread
• pipe cleaners
• popsicle stick (to stiffen neck)
• fiberfill stuffing
• G (4.00 MM) hook
• yarn needle
• Mini Free Spirit pattern (By Hook By Hand, scroll down in the left sidebar)

Hair

I don’t have an exact pattern for the hair I used…I sort of made it up as I went along. I can give you directions for the wig cap, though, and guidelines for the curls. Here’s the basic wig cap pattern I used, for reference.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring
Rnd 2-5: Work in back loops for the entire wig cap. Do the increases as directed in the pattern (a basic 6-st circle).
Rnd 6-7: Increase 3 sts in each of these rounds.
Rnd 8-10: Sc in each st around. At end of last rnd, sl st, fasten off and leave the end as long as you want the hair.

It got more complicated because I wanted a bare patch of scalp right over her forehead, so the curls wouldn’t fall into her face. I left spare loops for curls, but I didn’t want those visible on the bare patch. So I actually had to use math and figure it out. Here’s what I ended up with (or as close as I can guess)…

~ BLsc = back loop single crochet ~
~ Unless otherwise indicated, work through both loops ~
~ In BL = do entire round in back loops ~

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: In BL, 2 sc in each st around
Rnd 3: *Sc, 2 sc* around
Rnd 4: In BL, *Sc 2, 2 sc* around
Rnd 5: *sc 3, 2 sc* around
Rnd 6: In BL, sc around, increasing 3x randomly
Rnd 7: Sc around, increasing 3x randomly
Rnd 8: Sc 12, sc in BL of remaining sts. (This starts the bare patch of scalp.)
Rnd 9: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 10: Sc 10, sc in BL of remaining sts.
Rnd 11: Sc in each st around.

For the curls…I worked along the spare loops, doing a long chain and then single crocheting & skipping a stitch along it.

Along Rnd 11 I chained 40, did sc in 2nd ch from hk, *sc, sk 1* across, skip one stitch, and sl st into next 2 sts.

The next round of loops it was something like 44 and sl st in 3 sts in between.

Then it continued up to 50, then 54, then 60, then 64, or something like that. It was all trial and error.

Clothes

I did not write down the sweatshirt pattern, but her pants are the same as Cinder’s, except the separate legs start right after the first round.

And that’s it!
