How to Crochet Around a Picture

How to Crochet Around a Picture

What can you use this technique for? I’ve crocheted a bunch together to make bunting. You could use it for scrapbooking (using thinner yarn, of course), to edge a card, to make place cards, and more.

Materials: picture, yarn (any weight), crochet hook that will fit through your hole-punched hole easily, hole-puncher (mine does holes about 1/4 of an inch)

Find your picture. Mine is about 7 by 6 inches. Thicker paper works better, but I have made it work with printer paper.

Start by hole-punching in the corner of the picture, and then go down one side. You’ll want to make sure you have a hole in each corner, even if the holes get a bit crowded. Do this around the entire picture. (Is your hand cramping yet?)

Join your yarn somewhere on the top edge, making sure you have room to crochet over the end. Join as follows –

Put a slipknot on your hook and insert the hook into the hole.

Yarn over and pull up a loop, making sure it reaches to the edge of the paper. No tight crocheting here! Finish the single crochet as always – yarn over and pull through both loops.

After making your standing single crochet, chain as many chains as required to get your yarn over to the next hole without the paper puckering. For me, it was 1 chain most of the time. Then single crochet in the next hole, chain 1, sc in next hole…you get the idea.

While crocheting over my beginning tail, I like to weave in the end during the chains as well as crocheting over it during the single crochets.

To crochet over the tail during a single crochet, insert the hook under both the hole AND the yarn tail. Complete sc as always. — To crochet over the tail during a single crochet, insert the hook under both the hole *and* the yarn tail. Complete sc as always.

To weave the end into the chain: YO for the chain with both the working yarn and the beginning tail. — To weave the end into the chain: YO for the chain with both the working yarn *and* the beginning tail.

Pull the working yarn under the yarn tail and through the loop on the hook. Tail woven.

When you get to the corner, single crochet in the hole, and chain as many as needed to get your yarn around the corner. Then single crochet in the same hole, and continue on down the next side.

When you reach the corner and are making your first single crochet, make sure your YO doesn’t wrap around the left edge as above.

Instead it should be wrapping over the top edge. It will feel more awkward, but looks better in the end.

The finished corner, with no twisted stitches!

When you get back to the beginning, slip stitch into the first sc and fasten off. Weave the yarn tail in. Since this picture doesn’t have to be super sturdy, you can snip off the already-woven-in yarn tail.
