Hello! Today we’ll be learning one of the most commonly used crochet stitches, the double crochet. It’s quite easy once you know the single crochet, and as the name suggests, it’s exactly twice as tall. This stitch can be used for anything from sweaters to blankets to scarves, and it’s super useful to know.
Please visit this post to get a reminder of the basics. Today’s post will be short because I’m just going to show you to how to make the stitch…and also I’m lazy. 🙂
Start off by making a yarn over, and THEN put your hook into the stitch. This can be a little tricky at first, because the yarn over keeps trying to escape. Next, yarn over again and pull through the stitch. This will result in three loops on your hook (as in the above picture).
The next step is to yarn over, wrap the yarn around your hook, then pull through only the first TWO loops. This is the first half of the stitch. Two loops remain on your hook.
The final step is to yarn over and pull the yarn through those loops. One loop is on your hook, and the double crochet is complete:
Ta-dah!
When you’re finished with a row, you’ll want to make two or three chains and turn. Three is standard, but I prefer doing two because it minimizes holes. If your edges are super tight, though, try three chains. Then you’ll just double crochet across the row again, and chain two (or three) to turn. It’s that simple!

Double crochet is one of my favorites – blankets work up so quickly! – but I have to admit that lately, my absolute favorite is bobble stitch. You can add so much texture with it!
My favorite stitch changes often though, so ask in six months and you’ll get a different answer, lol. What is your favorite stitch, Claire?
I love how double crochet works up so quickly, I think that’s why I like it so much. 🙂 The bobble stitch is awesome, I wish I had written a post about it this month! It adds so much texture and interest…too bad it uses so much yarn though. >< I'm the same way with having a different favorite stitch every few months…that's such a hard question! I always seem to come back to the double or single crochet, but that's a pretty boring answer. Maybe front post stitches, because you can do so many cool things like cables with them! 😀 Thanks so much for commenting, River! 🙂
Ooh, front post stitch! It blew my mind when a friend taught me how to do them. I don’t consider myself a knitter, and I’d always been jealous of the cables and other cool designs that I thought couldn’t be replicated in crochet – so of course as soon as I learned I had to make a cable scarf. Haha.
And there’s nothing wrong with loving the basic stitches! Without them, it would be difficult to do any crochet at all. . . 😆
You’re so right about the basic stitches, I think they get overlooked sometimes in favor of the fancy ones…but I always go back to them! 🙂 Haha I’m the same way with being jealous of all those fancy knitted stitches…so I just end up looking up how to do them in crochet. 🙂 I wish I could knit, though!
