As some of you may know, my family has a flock of four backyard chickens. Their names are Harriet, Clementine, Blanche, and Pearl, and they’re wonderful pets. My chicken, Harriet, is a Plymouth Barred Rock, and she’s a sweet, very pretty, stripey birdie. So when my mom stumbled across a plush striped hen, I was a goner.
I got a commission to crochet a sweater for another one of these hens, which I did, and now I’m sharing the pattern with you! Your mileage may vary depending on how big your plush hen (or real hen) is. Just try the sweater on the hen as you go and modify if need be. My hen is fairly close in size to the real Harriet, so I’ll hazard a guess that this would fit a real hen as well. But I’m not going to try it out. Remind me to tell you about the time I actually crocheted a sweater for Harriet. :O
Materials
- Size J (6.00 MM) crochet hook
- Red Heart Super Saver yarn in yellow, or whatever color you want. Or substitute any thicker worsted-weight yarn.
- Yarn needle
Special Stitches
- For the picot stitch, I used Astri from Apple Blossom Dream’s variation.
- Side note: Thanks Sonia for helping sort out the stitch count in Row 4!
Chicken Sweater
Ch 41.
Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 5 sts. *Ch 10, sk next 10 sts*, sc in next 10 sts, rep from * to * once, sc in last 5 sts – wing holes made.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across, making 1 sc through 2 loops of each ch.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc across to last st, 2 sc in last st.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn. *Sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st* 6 times.
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Row 7: Ch 1, turn. *2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 sts* 6 times.
Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Row 9: Ch 1, turn. *Sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st* 6 times.
Row 10: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Row 11: Ch 1, turn. *2 sc in next st, sc in next 9 sts* 6 times.
Row 12-17: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Row 18: Ch 1, turn. Work a picot stitch across.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold the sweater right sides together and whipstitch the sides closed. Weave in ends. Turn right side out.
What do you think? I’m pretty pleased with how it came out, and I think I’ll make another non-commission one for my own plush hen. 😉 I hope the recipient likes her hen in a sweater!

I’m really confused at row 3. What does 1sc in through 2 loops of each chain mean? I’ve got a fatherless chicken desperate for some warmth! Thank you!

Hi Cathy! Sorry for the delayed reply, my notifications are being weird.
So for Row 2, we’re making the armholes (wing-holes?), which is what the two chain spaces are for. So to write it out longhand, the pattern would be ch 1 and turn, sc as normal for the first 5 stitches. Then chain 10, skip the next ten stitches (which makes an equal size hole on the bottom), and sc as normal in the next ten stitches. Repeat the chain 10, skip ten, and then sc in the last five stitches. For the next row you’ll make your stitches as normal until you get to the chains, and then work into them just as you do in a foundation chain.

this one i think i have. its for the wings. youll have 5 single crochet then chain 10, then count 10 stitches from where you did the last single crochet. in the 11th stitch continue with 10 singles. repeat the chain and then count 10 stitches off again then finish with 5 singles. hope that helps

i guess i don’t know how to do this right. doesnt row 5 require 42 stitches? but isnt row 4 still only 40 stitches?
Hi Sonia! You’re right, that was a mistake in the pattern, thanks for pointing it out! For Row 4, try putting an increase at the beginning and end of the row, which should bring the stitch count to 42 stitches. Obviously my math needs some work, hehe…sorry about that!
