Amigurumi Crochet

Toothless!

When I learned to crochet about three years ago, although it seems longer than that, I was completely obsessed with How to Train Your Dragon. You’ve probably gathered by now that I like to obsess over things ~ but this was before I discovered The Hunger Games or Frozen. After I discovered amigurumi, the first thing I wanted to make was an ami Toothless. But I never did. With the sequel coming out on Friday (you may have noticed the countdown in my sidebar), I thought it would be a good time to make a Toothless, to accompany me to the theater. 🙂 And here he is…

It was quite hard to get a decent picture of a black dragon without the sun glaring at the camera….outdoor lighting does have some drawbacks.

I wanted to post this now in case you wanted to bring Toothless along to opening day (same drill as the Katniss Cowl.) I followed a pattern by All About Ami with a few of my own modifications. I will now proceed to give you the details in case you’re a How to Train Your Dragon fan too. 😉

pattern

I’ve admired the Dragon pattern by All About Ami for a long time, but this was my first foray into it. IT’S AS AWESOME AS IT LOOKS. I have never seen such a cute, chibi-style dragon! Plus it’s extremely well written with lots of picture to follow. I <3 pictures 😀 (and emoticons)

For the eyes, I followed The Dragon’s Cave’s tips…she made a Toothless and I asked how she made the eyes, so she kindly shared her method. Here’s the link to the post, [edited because I forgot to put in the link!] scroll down to the comment section. I did do a slight variation on that:

With black, 6 sc in a magic ring. 2: Increase in each of next 5 sts. FO black, change to white, inc in last st with whiteFO white, change to green. 3: *Sc 1, inc* around. 4: *Sc 2, inc* around.

But I totally love dragonsashes way of doing it, so I highly suggest checking out her post. Thank you, fellow dragon makers!

materials

To make Toothless I used:

  • small amount of Red Heart Super Saver (which I love)
  • size D (3.25 MM) hook
  • a few yards of a light brown Vanna’s Choice (for the fake tail fin)
  • a bit of brown craft felt
  • hot glue
  • stuffing
  • for the eyes:
  • Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread, small amounts in black, white, and darkish green
  • size 2.1 MM hook (no idea what size it is!)

Since All About Ami used a 2 MM hook, and I used a 3.25 MM hook, my Toothless did turn out quite a lot bigger, as you can observe in the following picture:

I was a little surprised how large Toothless turned out, but I shouldn’t have been because I can never meet gauge even when I am using the right size hook. I wouldn’t have wanted to go any smaller because my yarn was worsted weight, and thick yarn + dark color + small hook + single crochet =  just a recipe for disaster.

my modifications

I loved using All About Ami’s pattern, and I only modified it because Toothless looked a bit different from her dragon. I added wings, a longer tail, tail fins, and ears. I thought I should write them here in case you wanted a method to follow.

WINGS (make 2)

Row 1: Ch 9. Starting in second chain from hook, sc 7, sl st in last st.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn. From now on, work in back loops only. Sl st 1, sc 7.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc 7, sl st 1.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3, one more time. Fasten off, leave long tail for sewing.

TAIL FINS

I crocheted along the tail itself with black yarn for the right fin and light brown for the left.

Right Fin: Join so you’re working up towards the body. Sc 3, starting from the end of the tail. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc inc. Ch 1, turn, sc inc, sc2tog. FO, weave in end.

Left Fin: Join so you’re working towards the end of the tail. Sc 3. Ch 1, turn, sc inc, sc2tog. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc inc. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Then I chained 8 with the light brown yarn and sewed it around to look like a strap.

I know a few of you said you hadn’t seen Frozen, so I’m curious ~ how many of you have seen How to Train Your Dragon?  I love polls, so here’s one for you:

Have a fabulous day! I’ll be back, probably…

(did you see what I did there? :D)
