Crochet Cabbage Free Pattern

A faithful reader sent me a suggestion several months ago to make a crocheted cabbage, and I just now got around to it.  I’m quite pleased with it, even if it does look a bit like a brain.  (The faithful reader blogs here, please go check out her blog!)

I hope you like the pattern!

 

Materials

• Size G (4.00MM) crochet hook
• Worsted weight yarn – I used I Love This Yarn in Limelight
• Stuffing – polyfil would work well, but I just used the nearest pile of yarn scraps.

All stitches are worked into the BACK HORIZONTAL BAR on the base.  Check out this tutorial for help, you’ll have to scroll down a little bit to see it.

Make a magic ring, ch 1, make 7 hdc into the ring.  (Obviously you aren’t going through the back bar for this step, as there aren’t any back bars in a magic ring!)

R2: 2 hdc in each st around.

R3: *hdc 1, 2 hdc in next st* around.

R4-6: hdc around.

R7: *hdc 1, hdc2tog* around.

R8: *hdc2tog* around.

FO, leaving semi-long tail.  Weave the yarn tail through the back bars of the last round and pull to tighten. Knot yarn and weave in ends.  You will have a bunch of Vs going around the base, which you’ll use to crochet the cabbage leaves.

Attach yarn to the first stitch you made into the magic ring with a standing double crochet.  (With a slipknot on your hook, YO, insert hook into the stitch, YO, pull up a loop – 3 loops on hook.  *YO, pull through 2 loops* 2 times, treating the slipknot as a normal loop.)

Make sure you’re going under both loops, now and throughout.  2 dc into the same st.  3 dc into every stitch around the entire cabbage base, until you get around to the other side.  Leave a smallish circle to put the face on, I think I did 3 dc in every stitch except for the last round of decreases.  Squish the double crochets into a circle and slip stitch to the appropriate one so it doesn’t look misshapen. Then cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

The face will be crocheted separately, then you’ll embroider the face and sew it on.

In a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc.

R2: 2 sc in each st around.

R3: *sc 1, 2 sc in next st* around.

Sl st to next st and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.  Embroider face as desired, referring to photo if needed.  Of course, if this is for a small child, don’t use buttons for eyes, because they might eat them. (I know this from experience, because I ate a button when I was a baby.)

Then sew the face to the last ring of double crochets.  I put some more stuffing between the face and the body so it was sealed in by the sewing, otherwise the face looked a bit concave.
