Granny Rose Shawl

Some time ago I joined in Astri’s Granny Rose CAL and made this pillow, and a slouchy hat, which you may remember if you’ve been following my blog for awhile. (I can’t take credit for the afghan, my mom made that ~ isn’t it amazing?) You can click here to see what other people made with the pattern, there are some pretty cool items.

The rose pattern is pretty awesome, it’s worked in the round so there’s no sewing up at the end. You can use it for a ton of things too. The pattern is for sale here. You’ll be thanking me later! 😀

You might be wondering what this has to do with a shawl. Well, I crocheted the above shawl as a prayer shawl for my church, and it needed a bit of embellishment…

So I added a giant granny rose, and it’s just what it needed. Now it’s much cheerier! 😀

The shawl is a basic granny triangle, here’s a pattern for it. I used 1 skein of white and 1 skein of peachy worsted weight yarn and a size J hook. (The yarn was donated so I don’t know what kind it is, but it’s really fuzzy and soft.) For the granny rose I used one strand of each color and a 10 mm hook and sewed it onto the right side. The edging is my own creation, it’s inspired by this flower (which, actually, is the first pattern I ever wrote. :D) It’s pretty basic, here it is if you like…the only tricky part is at the corner.

Row 1: Join at the end of any row, in the ch-sp, with a sc, ch 4, sc in same sp, *ch 4, sc in next sp* until you get to the corner, ch 4, sc again in the corner, *ch 4, sc in next sp* all the way to the other end, ch 4, sc in same sp.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn (count it as your 1st dc), dc in same sp, *ch 2, sk next 4 ch, 2 dc in next sc* across, when you get to the corner do 2 dc in 1st sc, ch 2, 2 dc in the chain space, ch 2, 2 dc in the next sc, ch 2, then do *ch 2, sk next 4 ch, 2 dc in next sc* all the way across, finishing with 2 dc in first sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, shell (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc all in the same space) in the next chain space, ch 1, sc in next chain space, *ch 1, shell in next chain space, ch 1, sc in next chain space* repeat until the corner, there should be 2 chain spaces to work into. shell in the first chain space, sc in between the next 2 dc, shell in the next chain space, sc in the next chain space, then continue the pattern until the end of the row.

If you get a chance, I really would recommend making a prayer shawl. Hats are much more my speed but this was still fun, even if it did take me a while. (I kept getting distracted.) You can do pretty much any pattern, though some prayer shawl ministries prefer rectangular ones…which can be really mindless! Yay for mindless crochet!
