How to Crochet: Triple Crochet

Bonjour,

Today I will be showing you the triple crochet.  It’s the tallest crochet stitch, and the double triple crochet is based off of it.  It’s the same as the double crochet, except with more yarn overs.

Start with a chain of the desired length.  I think I chained 10.

You’ll be going into the 5th chain from your hook.  

Turning Options

You can use a turning chain, counting it as a stitch or not, or a stacked single crochet (you’ll need to add an extra one.)  Here’s the turning chain (not counted as a stitch):

 

And the stacked single crochets:

Problem: So, you’ve made your chain of whatever length. Let’s say ten.  You go into the 5th chain from your hook and make a triple crochet.  But now you have this random, bumpy chain 4 sticking off the side of your piece.  How would you use a stacked single crochet in the first row?

Answer: Make a chain 1 more than you want the number of stitches to be.  (I want ten stitches, so I’ll chain 11.)  Make a stacked single crochet in the second chain from your hook, which will count as the first stitch.  Problem solved!
