Hungry Om Nom Amigurumi Pattern

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone who has visited my blog.  I never thought I could get over 500 views in one day!

Today, I’m going to share the pattern for the Om Nom with an open mouth, from this post.

Materials

• Worsted weight yarn in green & red/orange (you can use either, I did orange)
• Size G (4.00 MM) crochet hook
• Stuffing
• Yarn needle
• White felt, black thread, and a sewing needle
• A smallish button (doesn’t really matter what size, because you can adjust the size of the buttonhole)

Pattern Notes

The Om Nom is worked in a spiral.  Do not join rounds.  I suggest using a stitch marker to keep your place.  A row counter is also helpful.  If you’ve never done amigurumi before then you might want to do the Mini Om Nom first, it’s easier.

When fastening off, I almost always do a slip stitch before cutting the yarn.  Then I like to finish with an Invisible Join (sl st, sk 1, Invisible Join.)  But it’s fine if you don’t use it.

Special Stitches

Sc2tog = A single crochet decrease.  *Insert hook into next st, YO, pull up a loop* twice (3 loops on hook), then YO and pull through all three.

Fpslst = Front Post Slip Stitch.  Make a slip stitch the same way that you would do a front post double crochet (for example).  If you’re having trouble with it, just do a normal slip stitch.  It won’t make much of a difference.

Legs (Make 4)

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a Magic Ring.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around.

Rnd 3: *Sc 1, 2 sc in next st* around.

Rnd 4: In back loops only, sc 1 in each st around.

Rnds 5-7: Sc 1 in each st around.

Rnd 8: *Sc 3, sc2tog* three times, then sc 3.

Sl st 1 and fasten off.

Don’t stuff the Om Nom legs yet.  We need to sew them first.  Sew together three stitches from each leg so that you have four left over in the middle.  Cinch these up by threading the yarn through all 4 and pulling tight, knotting, and weaving in the end.  You will have 36 leftover stitches, 9 on each leg.

After you’ve sewn them up, then let’s proceed with Round 9.  We’re going to treat the 36 stitches as one round.

Rnd 9: Join the yarn somewhere, but not too close to the sewn-together sts.  Sc 1 in each st around.  Count to make sure that you have 36 stitches – it’s really easy to get the wrong number in this round!

Rnd 10: *sc 2, increase in next st* around.  If you end up with two extra stitches at the end of this round, then increase in both.

Rnds 11-13: Sc 1 in each st around, changing to orange at the end of last round.

Rnd 14: In back loops only, *sc 2, sc2tog* around.

Rnd 15: *sc 1, sc2tog* around.

Rnds 16 & 17: *sc2tog* around.

Stuff.

Rnd 18: Sc2tog, sl st, fasten off.

Top Half

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a Magic Ring.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st.

Rnd 3: *sc 1, 2 sc in next st* around.

Rnd 4: *sc 2, 2 sc in next st* around.

Rnd 5: *sc 3, 2 sc in next st* around.

Rnd 6: *sc 4, 2 sc in next st* around.

Rnd 7: sc 1 in each st around.

Rnd 8: *sc 5, 2 sc in next st* around.

Rnds 9-12: sc 1 in each st around.

Rnd 13: In front loops only, sc 1 in each st around.

Rnd 14: through BOTH LOOPS, sc around, but do not sc in last 10 sts, leave them unworked. Sl st 1, invisible join in next st, fastenign off.  Now there are 8 unworked sts.

Sc 1 in each st around, but do not sc in last 10 sts (leave them unworked).  Sl st in next st, Invisible Join in next st*, fasten off.  Now there are 8 unworked sts.

*If you don’t know how to do an Invisible Join, then replace this with a slip stitch.

Embroider Face:  Basically the same as the Mini Om Nom, but I did French knots for eyes.  In case you missed the post: Cut out two white felt circles for eyes, and make pupils on them with black thread.  Sew to head with whipstitch.  Cut 4 white triangles for teeth and sew in mouth shape (see picture for help).  Embroider black mouth, which will overlap the teeth somewhat.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure that you sew the face so that the gap of the 8 unworked stitches is behind the features.  You’ll add extra rows later, and if you sewed the face on wrong, the Om Nom head will be skewed.

Bottom of Head

Hold head upside down, like a bowl. Join with standing sc to the front loops that you left in Row 13.

Rnd 1: *sc 5, sc2tog* around.

Rnd 2: *sc 4, sc2tog* around.

Rnd 3: *sc 3, sc2tog* around.

Rnd 4: *sc 2, sc2tog* around.

Rnd 5: *sc2tog* around.

Stuff.

Rnd 6: *sc2tog* twice, fpslst.  Fasten off.

Remember those 8 unworked stitches we left while making the Top Half?  We’re going back to those now.

Hold the head upside down with the face facing you and join the yarn with a single crochet. You’ll want the right side of the stitches to be showing on the outside.

Row 1: Single crochet across.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, and slip stitch across.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, and single crochet across, but ignore the slip stitches and work into the single crochets.  This is done to make sure that you can’t see the slip stitches when you’re done.  It will also make it sturdier.

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. 

Antenna

(Stuffing as you go is a good idea, otherwise it will be tricky at the end.)

Rnd 1: Sc 6 in a Magic Ring.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around.

Rnd 3: *sc 1, 2 sc in next st* around.

Rnds 4-6: sc 1 in each st around.

Rnd 7: *sc 1, sc2tog* around.

Rnd 8: *sc2tog* around.

Rnds 9-13: sc 1 in each st around.

Sl st 1 and fasten off.  Sew to top of head.  (If you want the antenna to be longer, then add more rounds at the end.)

And…you’re done!  Congratulations!

I hope you like the pattern!  It was a very long process to write out, but it’s worth it if another Om Nom comes into existence.  😀
